TSB update on attendance at site of the 8 January 2020 accident involving Ukrainian International Airlines flight 752 in Tehran, Iran
Gatineau, Quebec, 10 January 2020 — The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has been in direct contact with the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau of the Islamic Republic of Iran and, as announced yesterday, has accepted its invitation to attend the accident site. Two TSB air accident investigators are leaving Canada today and will be meeting up with members of the Canadian consular team.
The TSB is communicating and coordinating directly with other participating accident investigation agencies, as we usually do when involved in foreign investigations. We are continuing to pursue increased involvement in the Iranian accident investigation. However, the full extent of the TSB’s role in this investigation—including the degree of site access and the type of work to be carried out once at the site or elsewhere—is still being determined.
We will continue to make public the information that we can confirm. We expect to conduct a formal media briefing in the coming days.
The TSB is an independent agency that investigates air, marine, pipeline, and rail transportation occurrences. Its sole aim is the advancement of transportation safety. It is not the function of the Board to assign fault or determine civil or criminal liability.
