2008 Highlights

Marine occurrences

In all, 398 marine accidents were reported to the TSB in 2008, a 13% decrease from the 2007 total of 455 and a 19% decrease from the 2003-2007 average of 491. Shipping accidents, which comprised approximately 85% of marine accidents, reached a 32-year low of 341 in 2008, down from 395 in 2007 and from the five-year average of 437. Fishing vessels comprised 43% of all Canadian-flag vessels involved in shipping accidents. Marine fatalities totaled 22 in 2008, up from both the 2007 total of 14 and the five-year average of 19. Thirty-one vessels were reported lost in 2008, up from both the 2007 total of 29 and the five-year average of 30.

In 2008, 235 marine incidents were reported in accordance with the TSB mandatory reporting requirements, up from 224 in 2007 and from the five-year average of 228.
