TRANSPORTATION SAFETY BOARD OF CANADA IS CONDUCTING AN INVESTIGATION INTO A DERAILMENT TODAY, 23 APRIL 1999 INVOLVING AN EASTBOUND VIA RAIL PASSENGER TRAIN NEAR THAMESVILLE, ONTARIO ON THE CHATHAM SUBDIVISION

(Hull, Quebec 23-04-1999) - The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has sent a team of investigators to the site of today's derailment of a VIA Rail passenger train. The accident occurred on the Chatham Subdivision near Thamesville, which is about 60 miles west of London, Ontario.

VIA Rail train No. 74 was eastbound with one locomotive and four passenger cars when the train derailed. There were more than 180 passengers on board.

Under the Canadian Transportation Accident Investigation and Safety Board Act, the TSB has the exclusive jurisdiction to investigate this occurrence in order to make findings as to its causes and contributing factors.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is an independent agency operating under its own Act of Parliament. Its sole aim is the advancement of transportation safety. It is not the function of the Board to assign fault or determine civil or criminal liability.
