(Prince Rupert, British Columbia, March 28, 2006) - The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has released video images of the wreckage of the passenger ferry Queen of the North that sank off Gil Island, British Columbia, on March 22, 2006.

Underwater images obtained from a submersible equipped with video cameras show that the vessel has been located in 1400 feet of water on the ocean floor, resting upright in silt.

Under the Canadian Transportation Accident Investigation and Safety Board Act, the TSB has the exclusive jurisdiction to investigate this occurrence in order to make findings as to its causes and contributing factors. The field phase of the investigation is now almost over, and TSB investigators will soon proceed with the post field phase and analysis of the information gathered from various sources.

The TSB is an independent agency that investigates marine, pipeline, railway and aviation transportation occurrences. Its sole aim is the advancement of transportation safety. It is not the function of the Board to assign fault or determine civil or criminal liability.
