THE TRANSPORTATION SAFETY BOARD OF CANADA HAS SENT A TEAM OF INVESTIGATORS TO THE SITE OF THE FATAL FLOATPLANE ACCIDENT, 04 AUGUST 1998 NEAR KINCOLITH, BRITISH COLUMBIA
(Hull, Québec - 05-August 1998) - An investigation team from the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has been sent to the site of the fatal float plane accident that occurred late yesterday afternoon near Kincolith, British Columbia (approximately 90 kilometres north of Prince Rupert).
The aircraft, a de Havilland Beaver DHC-2 on floats, operated by Harbour Air Ltd., was attempting a water landing at Kincolith when it crashed. There were no survivors among the five persons on board.
The aircraft will be recovered. The investigation will concentrate on the mechanical condition of the aircraft, the flight operations, and the weather conditions at the time of the accident.
Under the Canadian Transportation Accident Investigation and Safety Board Act, the TSB has the exclusive jurisdiction to investigate this occurrence in order to make findings as to its causes and contributing factors.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is an independent agency operating under its own Act of Parliament. Its sole aim is the advancement of transportation safety. It is not the function of the Board to assign fault or determine civil or criminal liability.
